Our Five Favorite Bookstores in Central Florida

Some would say that brick-and-mortar book stores are on their way out, but they are some of the first things we look for when traveling to new towns. There is just something about visiting a local shop with shelves full of stories. It gives an opportunity to find something new, gain recommendations, and even reminisce on some favorite reads. So, we would like to share some of our favorite finds when it comes to bookstores in Central Florida. These are in no particular order, simply a quick list for fellow bibliophiles here in the Sunshine State.

Spellbound Bookstore | Sanford, FL

Located in a new space in downtown Sanford, this bright and airy shop is a breath of fresh air when it comes to book shopping. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful with a curated selection of reads lining the shelves of their store. Their website has wonderful resources like recommendation lists, pre-ordering, and links to their Bookshop Page to promote online shopping with independent booksellers…the best of both worlds! While we were in Sanford in the fall, they had their old space decorated so beautifully and even had Blind Date with a Book options. Check out their Facebook Group for book clubs and literary discussions! We can’t wait to go and see their new space!

A picturesque coastal town with a lovely bookstore…what more could you ask for? Aesthetically pleasing bookshelves filled with unique prints of classic books as well as a focus on Florida literature and authors make this spot a favorite for us. Barrel of Books and Games | Mount Dora, FL

A cornerstone in the community, this bookstore located in the quaint downtown of Mount Dora offers intrigue and sustainability. On the many shelves, you may notice new and gently used books. This is because this spot offers in-store credits if you bring in the books you are finished with and might not want to keep as your reading trophies. In addition to a wonderful selection of reads, there is a small room devoted to collectible books, a larger room with comics and Funko Pops, as well as games and unique gifts. It is one of the best children’s book selections we have found!

Writer’s Block Bookstore | Winter Garden, FL & Winter Park, FL

Offering two locations in the Orlando area, we often find ourselves visiting both of these spots. Staying on trend and up-to-date with the most desirable books, you will find the top reads you might be looking for. This bookstore dominates the area as a community leader that has integrated itself into various areas to promote literacy. With a podcast, book club, author events, YouTube channel, and a well-developed website they bring a new light to independent booksellers.

The Book Loft | Fernandina Beach, FL

A two-story bookstore in a Historic Downtown on the East Coast of Florida is a dream. Offering both new releases as well as classics, there truly is something for everyone here. Tables with trending books and memoirs all combined with the best cozy feel that only being surrounded by books can bring make this is must-visit. While we visited there was a read-aloud event for children with many in attendance.

When you visit one of these locally owned, independent bookstores you doing so much more than buying books. You are giving back to families who have put everything into their passion, encouraging locals to get out and boost their local economy, and contributing to more community-based events. To me, nothing beats a cozy, eclectic bookstore!
